Hyderabad: A ban on motor vehicles in the vicinity of historic Charminar would be a reality with the State government keen on completing the pedestrianisation project within the next six months. It has also decided to beautify the precincts of Charminar and make it more appealing for tourists as well as residents.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao on Friday visited Charminar and inspected various works pertaining to the Old City and assured to complete all pending projects. He directed the GHMC officials to prepare a detail project report at the earliest and submit it to the government.

Speaking to the mediapersons, the Minister assured that the project would be completed in less than six months and said that the State government was ready to sanction additional funds to the existing Rs 35 crore grants to complete the pedestrian project.

As a part of beautification, KTR said that the state government would shift Sardar Mahal GHMC zonal office to Chandrayangutta and develop it into a museum, which would showcase 400 years of Charminar's existence.

In addition, the state government is also planning to set up hawker zones, food courts, multi-level parking complexes, pavements and create underground ducts to facilitate area cables, he said. The names and signs on the board in the vicinity would have uniformity with a government approved script, which brings additional attraction to the areas, the Minister informed.

He also said that the government would develop arches in all four directions and asked GHMC to submit a DPR. He said that the government would take up road widening project very soon after holding a meeting with local residents and owners of commercial establishments.

The Minister also assured the residents that government would acquire land only after consulting property owners and public representatives. The decision during his visit to Charminar raised many an eyebrows with the retail shop owners in Lad bazar questioning the State government's move.

Instead, they suggested to the government to acquire two and half feet on the either side of the road, which would make it 20 feet road. "We have been doing business here for three decades. If government starts road widening process, our family will lose livelihood," said Tarun Agarwal, a bangle shop owner.
