Hyderabad: V Sandhya was petrified when a traffic police man forcefully got into the auto in which she was travelling to office. “While I was travelling from East Marredpally by an auto, a traffic police stopped the auto and sat in the front seat for a ride. I was in for a rude shock and did not know what to do as I was traveling alone. I felt helpless,” she lamented.

In spite of government providing bus pass and vehicle facilities to the traffic personnel in the city, they are taking forceful free rides from motorists and auto drivers. Several motorists and auto persons complain that traffic police divert way of the commuters so as to reach their destination. Some traffic police in fact threaten auto drivers with a challan.

An auto driver Ramesh Naik lamented if they do not oblige the traffic police personnel would send a challan home by taking a photo of the vehicle. “I make a living by running an auto. I oblige traffic police as I don’t want any sort of problem to arise. But this issue is becoming big day by day and we do not know how to overcome it,” Ramesh said.

A techie Ramya who travels by auto to Hi-Tech city said that she faces this problem quite often. “The auto drivers are helpless and they cannot do anything. I feel officials need to take some initiative regarding this issue as this could cause discomfort to passengers too,” she said. Another techie Manisha Agarwal lamented that several incidents were reported of fake police in the city. “How can we trust the traffic police who sit in the auto?” she questioned.

Hyderabad, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Jitender, admitted the issue, but stated that there were isolated cases in the city. “We do not encourage traffic police to take free rides on two wheelers or autos. Basically they have their own vehicles and bus passes to commute.

There are some isolated cases where traffic police do take free rides from commuters but we are against such things. There is no such policy where a traffic police can take free rides. The victims can contact us on Facebook (hyderabadtrafficpolice) and helpline number 9010203626.We would initiate stern action if such cases are reported,” he stated.
