Mangapet (Warangal): Large numbers of workers of Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT) have on Monday staged a protest demanding payment of wages, pending since 13 months.

They staged road blockade for long time by squatting on Erravagu bridge on Burgampad-Eturunagaram road stretch at Kamalapur village in Mangapet mandal, in support of their demand. Their protest led to disruption of vehicular traffic for a long time.

Earlier, they took out a protest rally, shouting slogans against the factory management.
Heated arguments took place between the police and the workers, when the police intervened and tried to disperse the protesting workers. As the workers refused to give up the protest, the police forcefully moved them and arrested the leaders.

Speaking to press persons on the occasion, the BILT Employees JAC leader V Srinivasulu said they have been protesting inside the factory during lunch breaks in front of the DGM’s office seeking clearance of the dues. But the factory management failed to respond and the negligent attitude of the management has forced the workers to take to the streets again and to launch protests.

The management has not begun production on full scale as the State government extended support, he alleged.
The workers were starving and facing difficulty in meeting their monthly expenses at home as they were not receiving salaries. The government should come to the rescue of workers as the management was acting in an adamant manner, he urged.

The government should ensure that the management runs factory properly, otherwise the government should take it over, the JAC leader said reminding that subsidies on power supply and wood to a tune of Rs 30 crore per annum was being provided to the factory besides a financial assistance of Rs 210 crore.

It might be noted that the management closed down the factory in April 2014 as it suffered losses forcing the employees’ to stage relay hunger strike for 320 days. About 7,000 workers were dependent on the factory through direct and indirect employment.
