Adilabad: The health benefits of the seasonal fruit are virtually more than an apple and it also helps keep the doctor away. Blackberry fruit (nalla neredu) is one of the important forest produce of the district, which is available in rainy season.
The pulpy fruit is popular for its nutrient values and medicinal properties. Consumption of berries helps enhance the immunity of the body, besides purifying blood. It does no harm even to diabetics.
Tribals who pluck the berries from trees in the deep forest, sell the fruit to traders in Adilabad, Mancherial, Nirmal and other towns. In the wake of reports of using chemicals for artificial ripening of other fruits, the demand for berries has increased this season as the fruit grown in the wild is literally organic. Berries are priced at Rs 100 per kg in the market.
Speaking to The Hans India, Younis Khan, a vendor, said “I bring the berries from Jannaram. I earn an income of Rs 500 a day during the season by selling berries.’’ Gangadhar, a consumer, said ``Blackberry is my favourite fruit. I do not miss eating berries during the season every year.’’
Explaining the nutritional values and medicinal properties of berries, Dr Suryakanth said ``Consumption of the fruit is immensely beneficial to the body. Berries help keep several diseases at bay. It is also good for pregnant women. Hybrid berries hit the market in recent times. Hence, people need to be cautious while purchasing the seasonal fruit. Unlike natural berries, hybrid fruit is not totally good for health.’’
