Nalgonda: Despite the series of protests by Opposition parties and public opposing the hike in RTC fares, the increased bus charges came into force from midnight of Sunday. As per the increased fare, commuters have to pay Rs one additionally for less than 30 km distance and Rs 2 for more than 30 km in Palle Velugu buses.

The fare in express buses is increased by 8 paisa per km and it is 9 paisa per km for deluxe buses. While for Super Luxury, Indra and Garuda buses, it is 11 paisa, 14 paisa and 16 paisa per km respectively.

According to official sources, presently 743 buses are operating from Nalgonda, Narketpally, Suryapet, Devarakonda, Miryalguda, Yadagirigutta and Kodad depots in the district and are traveling about 2.83 lakh kilometers daily ferrying about
four lakhs passengers to their destinations.

On an average of 70 percent occupancy, the RTC would get revenue of Rs 70 lakh per day against Rs 82.5 lakh per day with full occupancy. The rise in hike may increase the revenue by Rs 7 lakh per day but still there would be a short fall of Rs 5.5 lakh per day and Rs 20 crores per annum.

This difference should be filled by other means, which includes increasing occupancy ratio, introducing TIMS services (without conductors), oil saving, reducing OT s and staff, in addition to introducing new schemes etc.

Trade union leaders are demanding the government to release all the dues to the Corporation immediately in a single go to save it from the loss.

After two years the government allowed the Corporation to raise the fare by 10 percent to get rid of losses but this rise may cover the RTC losses to certain extent only, but not completely, they observed. If only the government allowed the Corporation to increase the fares by 20 percent, exempting the services like Palle Velugu being run for poor rural commuters, the RTC would steer into profits, they added.
