Nizamabad: The 14 gates of the Babli Reservoir project, constructed by the Maharashtra government were opened by the officials of the Central Water Resources Commission (CWRC) on Friday in the presence of the Irrigation department of the two states respectively.

While the Telangana State was represented by Project Superintending Engineer Satyanarayana, Maharasthra was represented by executive engineer Lavarale and another executive engineer Srinivas represented the These gates would be kept open for four months till October 28 this year. According to reports, there is only 0.05 tmc of water at present in the reservoir.

The Maharashtra government, which took up the construction of the Babli project in the year 2003 at a cost of Rs 20 crore to utilise 2.64 tmc of water and completed in 2013. This led to a dispute between the States of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and a petition was filed in the Supreme Court.

In its judgment, the Supreme Court told the Central Water Resources Commission to broker a deal between the two states and on the basis of the agreement, it was decided to lift the gates of the Babri project for four months every year fro July 1.

As a result, there is a possibility of Godavari River waters being utilised by the people of Telangana State and it would be boon to the farmers of Adilabad and Nizamabad districts, especially at a time when the Sriram Sagar Project is almost going dry.

Unfortunately, even till the end of June, the Sriram Sagar project has not been filled though it could irrigate 18 lakh acres of land and the ayacut farmers would have to bear the brunt As such, they are eagerly waiting for the lifting of gates, as they could irrigate large tracts of land during the kharif season if the project receives large quantities of flood waters

Although the height of the SRSP is 1091 feet and has a capacity to hold 90 tmc of water, the water level was up to a height of 1046.60 feet, below the dead storage level. After the year 1987, it is for the first time that the SRSP hit the dead storage level creating anxiety among the farmers. Unless it receives flood waters, irrigation becomes extremely difficult as there is only 4.5 tmc of water at present. The lifting of gates may bring cheers to the farmers.
