Merciless killing of girl children even before coming out of its mother’s womb has become a matter of great concern in Mahbubnagar. Mahbubnagar: Merciless killing of girl children even before coming out of its mother’s womb has become a matter of great concern in Mahbubnagar. According to estimates in the district, out of 80,000 pregnancies, only 72,000 have been reported to have given births, while the remaining 8,000 pregnancies have been reported to be aborted during the past one year.
The alarming figures of pregnancies being aborted or dropped in the middle clearly gives indication to the fact, that the menace of female infanticide is on the rise in the district and if not intervened right at this juncture, it may prove fatal to the existence of humanity in future.
Expressing her concern, Dr. T K Sridevi, District Collector, Mahbubnagar said, “Gender discrimination is very high in our society, particularly with regard to girl child, many have a narrow view and resorting to merciless terminations within the womb in the form of abortions.”
Interestingly, the collector observed that the menace of female infanticide is growing in the district with the support of greedy and unscrupulous doctors, Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) in the rural areas and even the hand of some of the ANMs and Anganwadis is also suspected in the increase of abortions in the district.
For instance, a recent case of abortion was reported in Maddur mandal of Narayanpeta constituency where a man along with his parents forced his wife to go for abortion when it was discovered that the baby in the womb was a female. Consequently, the collector issued strict warning to the diagnosing centres, doctors, ANMs and RMPs who are allegedly becoming part of illegal abortions.
“More than 10 per cent of abortions are suspected to have been done after diagnosing through gender tests. It is high time that government departments along with healthcare professionals in the villages work with humanity and view female infanticide as a serious offence,” the collector expressed her concern at the SVS Medical college Auditorium, while addressing to officials of rural healthcare in the district.
Current population, statistics indicate that there is a growing imbalance between the male and female population in the district. As against every 1000 male persons, there are only 936 females. Alampur is ranked as the worst mandal in the district with respect to the ratio of males and females being 1000 to a mere 780.
“Though there are laws enacted to stop this menace, there is not a single case booked against anybody for resorting to female infanticide. This is indicative of non-serious mechanism at the implementation-level,” said Balaranjit Prasad, additional deputy collector. However, the healthcare department and the district medical health officers claim that any case reported with concrete evidence will not be spared.
