Thoguta: The people of Etigadda Kishtapur took a pledge to protect their lands from being acquired for Mallanna Sagar reservoir as part of the Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Project on Monday, during the concluding ceremony of CPI(M) padayatra of all the 14 villages coming under submersion as part of the project.

The event also coincided with the death anniversary of Doddi Komaraiah, a revolutionary who played a key role in the Telangana Peasants Armed Struggle. Speaking at the event, Professor Haragopal said that the question was not whether to implement the 2013 Act or GO 123.

“In your developmental model in a state achieved by the struggles of the people, they only want to know how their lives would improve because of these projects being built in the name of development?” he asked. He questioned who had really benefitted because of Srisailam, Hirakud and Narmada projects.

“It is a reality that the people of the gram panchayat which gave permission for the construction of Srisailam project, are living without electricity even 30 years after the construction of the project,” he pointed out. Thammineni Veeerabhadram, CPI(M) State Secretary, who had toured all the 14 villages since July 1, questioned the very need to acquire lands using GO 123, as he felt that the government probably meant to misutilise the lands that way.

He also found fault with the District Collector for acquiring lands without giving notification and without even having the Detailed Project Report (DPR) ready. “The reservoirs being built for a project where water is being sourced from 200-kilometres away is nothing but stupidity,” he observed.

Former MP Solipeta Ramchandra Reddy, CPI (ML) New Democracy State Secretariat Member Rangaiah, CITU State President Chukka Ramulu, Hymavathi and others were present at the event.
