The officials of the district civil supplies department, in connivance with the shop dealers, are trying to shift them to the open market through the backdoor and sell them in black market. As a result, the public distribution system has lost track.
Nizamabad: Essential commodities like rice, wheat, sugar, and green gram, which should be available to the poor at the fair price shops are not found there but instead, were being hoarded in the houses of unscrupulous fair price shop dealers, instead of the godowns of Food Corporation of India.
The officials of the district civil supplies department, in connivance with the shop dealers, are trying to shift them to the open market through the backdoor and sell them in black market. As a result, the public distribution system has lost track.
The illegal sale of essential commodities in black market is going on at a brisk pace that 215 cases were booked under Section 6 (A) during the last two years and essential commodities worth Rs 3.5 crore were seized.
There are as many as 1,332 fair price shops in the district. The government has sanctioned 5,97, 851 food security cards, 38,528 antyodaya cards and 224 Annapurna cards for the beneficiaries.
Under the Re I kg rice scheme, the district civil supplies department is supplying 10,000 metric tonnes of rice through fair price shops and the State civil supplies department is supplying rice under the public distribution system to various divisions by taking them from the FCI godowns. If there are four members in a family, 24 kg of rice are supplied.
It is an open secret that the officials at the mandal level supply points have entered into a shady deal with the fair price shop dealers to swindle rice and other essential commodities while thousands of families having genuine beneficiaries are not reaping the benefits under the Rs 1 kg rice scheme.
Even in villages, the people are being deprived of the rationed commodities on some silly pretext or the other like missing Aadhaar card numbers and deleting of names.
While some of the people did not purchased the rationed items, it was falsely stated in the registers that they took the commodities. Smuggling or large quantities of rice, sugar and green gram used to take place without any checks.
While even 50,000 kg of rice is not found in the bags in fair price shops, they are found in private shops. The 1 kg rice is being sold for Rs 10 kg, much to the sfchok of the customers.
In the recent past, several bags of rice and wheat were seized from various shops. What is surprising is that although there is an official of the rank of a Deputy Tahsildar, there are three assistant civil supply officers for each revenue division, they are unable to put an end to the smuggling of essential commodities and their black marketing. Unfortunately, even the vigilance officers in the rural areas are not able to anything in this regard.
