Officials gear up to plant 3.44 cr saplings from July 8

Warangal: Different government agencies, NGOs, social groups, educational institutions and civic bodies in the district are gearing up for the second phase of ‘Telangana Haritha Haram’ scheduled to be launched on July 8.

The district administration has planned to plant about 3.44 crore saplings across the district. A district-level core committee has been formed to monitor the plantation programme. On the first day, saplings will be planted on 5 km stretch at Rampur on the outskirts of Warangal.

District Collector V Karuna who chaired a series of review meeting with the officials of the Revenue, Forests departments and other departments, told them to fully involve themselves in the programme.

She also made an appeal to the public to join the two-week long plantation programme enthusiastically.The Collector has told the officials to identify government lands for taking up block plantation. The officials, gram panchayats and revenue divisions who make the programme a success in their respective areas will be given prizes.

Speaking to The Hans India on Tuesday, Divisional Forest Officer (Social Forestry) said that around four crore saplings were being grown in about 200 nurseries across the district. Among these, 44 lakhs were teak plants and two lakh fruit bearing plants, he added.
District Water Management Agency (DWMA) Project Director Y Sekhar Reddy revealed that the agency was going to supply 1.5 crore teak plants to the farmers to plant them on the farm bunds under the MGNREGS.

He said that 1.75 lakh saplings would be planted at government schools and public offices. The saplings would be planted in the vacant forest lands and on both sides of the road leading to Laknavaram Lake and Phakal Lake and around them, besides flowering plants.

The saplings will also be planted at Medaram, Oorattam, Kannayipalli and Chilakalagutta near the Sammakka-Sarakka gaddelu. In order to involve the children, at least one lakh fruit bearing saplings by the school children under Balala Haritha Haram would be planted.
According to Shekar Reddy, they planted 1.25 crore saplings last year and the survival rate was 53 percent.

The GWMC Mayor N Narender said they have 3.80 lakh plants available and 60,000 grown up plants were being procured from nurseries at Kadiam in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. He said that avenue plantation would be taken up at Fort Warangal. Plans are on the anvil to involve traders, private schools and self help groups in the plantation programme, he added.
