Hyderabad: After succeeding in convincing the Maharashtra government to take up the prestigious multi-crore Kaleswaram–Pranahitha Lift Irrigation scheme on River Godavari, the State government has begun an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study of the projects to get all environmental clearances from the Union government.

As a beginning, State irrigation officials would be attending a meeting in New Delhi on July 12 to finalise the terms of references to prepare the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for Chanaka – Korata project being taken up under Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) invited the State government to attend the meeting based on the report of the environmental impact assessment study of Chanaka– Korata project, conducted by a consultancy.

The environmental impact assessment report on Chanka – Korata project said that the submergence at the project site was almost nil. Destruction of forests, mining area and natural habitat also did not arise near the project. For another two projects – Tummidihatti and Medigadda under Kaleswaram, the State government entrusted EPTRI (Environmental Protection Training and Research Institute) to conduct the impact assessment study of the projects.

The report would be submitted to the ministry which would forward the same to the Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) for final approval. Since it is mandatory for every project to get environmental clearance, the official agency – EPTRI in coordination with the irrigation department would conduct a field study to assess the environmental impact at Tummudihatti and Medigadda project sites in three months.

No objection certificates from the Maharashtra government on submergence of the areas at the projects would also be included in the assessment study. As there is major environmental impact at the project sites, the State government has already taken up works before getting clearances from the ministry.

These three ongoing projects are required to get environmental clearances before completion of the works, according to officials.
