Rangareddy: Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy participated in a mega plantation drive in Vikarabad and Tandur municipalities on Monday. Speaking after planting saplings at Kamalanagar Park in Vikarabad, he said promotion of greenery should be taken up as a mass movement in the State.

Four lakh saplings would be planted in Vikarabad and Tandur civic bodies as part of Telanganaku Haritha Haram campaign, he said. The State Government had decided to plant 40,000 saplings in each village to ensure the success of Haritha Haram, the Minister added.

Later, Mahender Reddy participated in a plantation drive at the Government Junior College in Tandur. Speaking on the occasion, he said emphasis should be laid on nourishment of saplings planted as part of the green drive. The TRS government was determined to raise the forest cover of Telangana from 24 per cent to 33 per cent of the total area of the State to curb environmental pollution, he said.

After taking part in the green campaign, he inaugurated a community hall for the physically challenged constructed at a cost of Rs 5 lakh at Peddemul mandal headquarters. A maternity centre building constructed at a cost of Rs 5 lakh was also inaugurated by him.

Later, he laid the foundation stone for an Anganwadi centre building to be constructed at a cost of Rs 8 lakh. The Minister also distributed prizes to the winners of essay writing and elocution competitions. Vikarabad MLA B Sanjeeva Rao, Municipal Chairpersons V Satyanarayana and K Vijayalakshmi, Sub-Collector Srutha Oza, municipal councillors and others were present.
