Hyderabad: Unusual traffic snarls were reported after heavy rain lashed various parts of the city in two spells on Tuesday. The city received over 5 cm rainfall since the wee hours.

The most affected were children trying to reach their schools in time, as the rain stopped only around 8.30 am after nearly two hours of pouring incessantly. Office-goers too suffered to reach their destinations due to traffic slowdown on almost all the arterial roads in the city.

Traffic congestion was reported from several areas, including Toli Chowki, Mehdipatnam, Madhapur, Begumpet, Secunderabad, Raj Bhavan Road, Nacharam, Srinagar Colony, Masab Tank, Langerhouz, Nampally, Mozamjahi Market, Aramgarh bridge, Khairatabad, Saroornagar, Kukatpally and Banjara Hills.

Pouring out his woes, S Kiran Kumar, a private employee working with a MNC said, “I usually reach my office at Khairatabad on time after dropping children at Abids. But on Tuesday, I dropped my children late and went to office late by an hour due to traffic congestion on the Himayathnagar-Abids stretch and Namaplly-Lakdikapool-Khairatabad stretch.

“As the rain stopped, everyone took to the streets to reach their respective destinations. The sheer volume of traffic was way too much for the police to tackle,” he said.

Police deployed nearly 2,500 personnel to ensure smooth flow of traffic. Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic II) AV Ranganath said that the department officials from the ground level regulated traffic at various points that witnessed water-logging. He appreciated the efforts of traffic cops in taking the initiative to clear clogged storm water drains at several places.

The GHMC pressed into service 119 special teams which cleared water stagnation points and repaired manholes. It claimed to have filled 5,717 potholes in the last six days with 1,612 being filled on Monday alone. The GHMC has identified 724 water-logging points in the city and has worked out alternative ways to clear logging at 673 points.
