Khammam: The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) national vice-president Sarampalli Malla Reddy has deplored over the state of affairs in the State, while faulting the government for denying the Opposition party leaders from visiting the people living in villages that are bound to make way for the proposed irrigation projects.
Speaking at a round table conference, presided over by the Bhoo Nirvasitula Porata Committee district convener Nunna Nageswara Rao here on Friday, he noted that it was unfortunate that the Opposition leaders were not permitted to meet the oustees under Mallanna Sagar irrigation project.
He criticised the government for not being transparent in land acquisition. ‘Be it in the matter of acquiring land for irrigation projects or open cast mines, the rulers continue to undermine the interests of the displaced,’ he alleged.
“Both the Central and the State governments are hell-bent on bulldozing the provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
Though the BJP-led NDA government tried its best to amend the Bill, the Left parties stood firm and successfully opposed it,” Reddy said.
Expressing fear that the displaced under the Sri Sitaram Project in Khammam are also likely to face the same fate that the oustees of Mallanna Sagar Project were facing, Reddy demanded the government to reveal the detailed project report (DPR), besides lending its ear to the Opposition Party leaders’ opinions.
This apart, the government should not be unilateral in acquiring land for projects.
CPM district secretary P Sudarshan Rao said: “No one will come in the way of irrigation projects as long as the government shows its commitment towards the irrigation projects.
However, the government will face the heat of people’s movement if it resorts to forceful land acquisition by bulldozing the rights of the people.”
CPI district secretary Bagam Hemanth Rao said: “The government is deliberately escalating the costs of irrigation projects to benefit the contractors, thereby its leaders.” The TRS leaders are more focused on publicity rather than development, he said.
Though there was no clarity on irrigation projects being taken up in the district, the government has got down to the business of land acquisition, CPI-ML New Democracy State leader Rayala Chandrasekhar alleged, demanding the rulers to reveal the DPRs.
Nunna Nageswara Rao said: “The government should stabilise the ayacut area under Nagarjuna Sagar Left Project Canal by diverting Godavari waters to Palair Balancing Reservoir.
