Nizamabad: The Nandakumari Government Working Women’s Hostel at Subhash Nagar in the district headquarters is in poor condition defeating its very purpose.

The number of inmates in the hostel, being run by the Department of Women Development and Child Welfare, has come down drastically due to lack of basic amenities and poor maintenance.

The then Major and Medium Irrigation Minister P Sudarshan Reddy had inaugurated the hostel on June 21, 2011. Initially, the hostel was maintained well and many working women joined the hostel.

But later on the officials neglected the maintenance of the hostel, which forced the inmates to leave the place.

At present, the hostel has 33 inmates only. In the absence of a security guard, anti-social elements are frequently trespassing into the hostel premises at night.

Though the inmates made several representations to the Women Development and Child Welfare officials seeking improvement of amenities and proper maintenance of the hostel, no steps were taken in this regard.

Despite a complaint to the three town police about the illegal activities of anti-social elements on the hostel premises, security at the place has not been strengthened.

The inmates are worried about their safety in the night without security in the wake of increase in atrocities against women in recent times.

Expressing concern over the poor maintenance of the working women’s hostel, the student unions demanded the State government taking immediate measures to run it on proper lines.

The local police should strengthen security in the hostel area to protect the women inmates from the threat of eve-teasers and stalkers, the unions said.
