Warangal: Telangana State Archaka Samakhya and Brahmana Sangham leaders have come forward to protect the rights of widows and ensure a respectable place for them in the society.
Addressing a gathering of widows below the age of 25 at a conference organised by Kazipet based Bala Vikasa Social Service Society (BVSSS) at its People Development Training Centre on Tuesday, Archaka Sangham state president G Upendra Sharma strongly objected to the practice of disallowing widows from wearing bangles, putting on flowers and bottu (bindhi).
He said such obnoxious practices were imposed by some pundits, scholars and leaders to impose their might on the society.
Sharma said no priest, scripture and theology has the right to stigmatise the widows or ill-treat them. They have every right to lead normal lives.
Just because a woman’s husband dies, she should not be looked down upon and be cursed, he added. As a result, the woman who should be respected was being degraded and humiliated in the name of widowhood.
The widows should first change their attitudes and take part in the activities like celebrating ‘Bathukamma’ and other festivals. “As the leader of Archaka Sangham, I fully extend my support to your cause”, he added.
The Brahmana Sangham president V Jaganmohan Sharma has stressed on the need for widows’ remarriage. There was no need for a woman to live alone after the demise of her husband.
The practice of forbidding widows from attending social and religious ceremonies has been degrading the self-respect of women, he lamented.
The Greater Warangal Brahmana Sangham president Valluri Pavan Kumar expressing serious concern over the plight of widows in the society said through the organization, he would make all out efforts to educate the people against stigmatising the widows.
The leaders of Archaka Samakhya and Brahmana Sangham have decided to conduct a meeting of widows and their children in the month of September by inviting social reformers, writers, poets and others concerned.
Bala Vikasa Executive Director S Showry Reddy said the BVSSS works without discriminating on the basis of any religious, caste and political affiliations and believes in humanitarian approach towards problems of the people.
The segregation of widows by the society has to be seen in an empathetic manner and the practice should be discontinued, he added.
Nearly 200 widows took part in the meeting and they expressed happiness at the support extended by Archaka Samakhya and Brahmana Sangham leaders. Bala Vikasa widows programme officer T Manjula, staff member M Sivaram and others were present.
