Kothagudem (Khammam): Well-set to become a district, coal town Kothagudem is on the threshold of a golden age as it now stands to get a university as well. Taking away a host of industries, mineral deposits, forest wealth and famous temples from the kitty of existing Khammam district, Kothagudem has a lot in store for development than any other district in the state.

Bestowed with abundant natural resources besides having Singareni coal mines and other major industries like KTPS Paloncha, Navbharat Ferro Alloys, NMDC, ITC paperboards, Heavy Water Plant which serve as a growth engine to propel economy, Kothagudem is sitting pretty with vibrant industrial potential.

Upcoming projects such as Bhadradri Thermal Power Station (Manuguru) and Oil Palm Processing unit at Apparaopet in Dammapet mandal are also expected to boost the economy of the new district. The proposed airport could well be an asset in terms of transforming the coal belt region into a major logistics hub.

These apart, the new district will have huge potential to become tourism hub with Bhadrachalam, widely acclaimed as Dakshin Ayodhya, Parnasala, Paloncha Peddamma temple, River Godavari, Kinnerasani Wild Life Sanctuary, Bogatha waterfalls etc.

‘Vastratan’, an ambitious project being formulated by the ministries of textile and tourism to promote niche tourism linking it with textile tourism by establishing a Craft Village in Bhadrachalam, is also on the anvil to create an institutionalised marketing facility for the Adivasis to sell their bamboo-based products.

Adding more colour to the existing developmental plans, the Telangana State Council Higher Education (TSCHE) has constituted a seven-member committee headed by former vice-chancellor of Ambedkar University VS Prasad to study the feasibility of upgrading the Kothagudem School of Mines (known as University College of Engineering) into a university.

In 1978, the Osmania University shifted its Mining Department to the coal town naming it as Kothagudem School of Mines. Later, it was brought under the administration of Kakatiya University in 1994, adding new courses - CSE, EEE, IT and ECE with an intake of 227 students a year.

Speaking to The Hans India, Kothagudem MLA Jalagam Venkat Rao, who is pursuing the matter with the government, said: “The aim is to produce industry-ready graduates by setting up a world-class industry inter-linkage varsity with an outlay of Rs 240 crore in tie up with SCCL and other industries.”

University College of Engineering principal B Sesha Sreenivas said: “Located on 398 acres, the college has all the necessary components to be upgraded as a varsity.”
