​Hyderabad: The State Met office predicted heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. On Wednesday, Hyderabad received heavy rainfall with 121 mm rainfall recorded at Fever Hospital in the city.

The people of the twin cities woke up to dark clouds and heavy rain. Office-goers and schoolchildren were caught in the downpour as rain pounded almost all parts of the city and the outskirts.

Low-lying areas were inundated and the main roads were flooded brining the city to a halt. Traffic jams were noticed in LB Nagar, Ameerpet, Mehdipatnam, Abids, Koti, Secunderabad and Dilshuknagar. Heavy inflows into Hussainsagar led to an increase in the water level and the GHMC lifted the sluice gates and released the water downstream.

The heavy rain, which began around 7 am and continued till afternoon, claimed seven lives. Four children were among the dead in incidents of wall collapse. Two of the children were killed along with their parents who were construction labourers when a boundary wall of a building fell on their hut in Ramanthapur area.

In another incident in Bholakpur, a woman and her two daughters were killed when the roof of their house collapsed. The deceased were identified as Bilkis Begum (25), Maria (5) and Zeba (2).

The state government announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia and Mayor Bonthu Rammohan sanctioned Rs 2 lakh financial assistance for kin of the deceased. Director of Met office Y K Reddy said that it is after a very long gap that the city received copious rains.

It was way back on August 24, 2000 that the city received 24 cm rain in 24 hours but on Wednesday, in a matter of three hours, the city received 12 cm rain. Maximum rainfall was recorded in Amberpet, Saidabad, Malkajgiri, Qutbullapur. Khairatabad, Ameerpet, Bahadurpura, Keesara, Himayatnagar and Charminar mandals in the city.

According to Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao, the GHMC identified 1,997 buildings in dilapidated condition, out of which the corporation had so far demolished 940 buildings, 95 buildings have been rectified by the owners and about 150 buildings have been facing court cases. He appealed the owners of the dilapidated buildings to vacate them immediately.
