Bhadrachalam: The very existence of Bhadrachalam division seems to be under threat with the State government’s reported decision to merge Vajedu and Venkatapuram mandals with the newly proposed Bhoopalapally district. Prior to the Andhra Pradesh State bifurcation, the Bhadrachalam division, which spread over 200 km, had eight mandals. After the formation of Telangana, Chintur, Kunavaram, Vara Ramachandrapuram and Bhadrachalam (excluding Bhadrachalam panchayat) mandals, which faced submersion threat from the multipurpose Polavaram project, went to Andhra Pradesh. The number of mandals in the division will decline further if it is divided once again.

A sense of uncertainty has prevailed among people of Bhadrachalam Assembly constituency as there is no guarantee that the remaining Bhadrachalam, Dummugudem and Charla mandals will be retained in future.Bhadrachalam Lok Sabha constituency, which was formed in 1967 in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh with Bhadrachalam, Burgampadu, Polavaram, Gopalapuram, Yellavaram, Chintapalli and Paderu Assembly segments, already disappeared in 2009 during delimitation of constituencies, paving way for Mahabubabad parliamentary seat.

Contrary to the claims of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaders that the agency division will achieve rapid economic growth with the formation of Bhadrachalam and Kothagudem districts, it seems unlikely as it will lose two of its mandals to Bhoopalapally district. There are apprehensions that Bhadrachalam Assembly constituency may also vanish in future with the further decline in number of its mandals. The tribal associations of Bhadrachalam division are against the move to merge Vajedu and Venkatapuram mandals with the newly proposed Bhoopalapally district as it will hurt people’s sentiments, who were strongly attached to the major pilgrim centre.

It was not correct on the part of the TRS government to merge the two mandals of the division with Bhoopalapally yielding to the political pressure, they said.Speaking to The Hans India, Bhadrachalam MLA Sunnam Rajaiah said he would strongly oppose any move to delink Vajedu and Venkatapuram mandals from the agency division during reorganisation of the districts.

He threatened to launch an agitation with the support of other parties if the two mandals were merged with Bhoopalapally district against people's wish.MLC Balasani Laxminarayana said he already urged Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to give up the proposal to delink the two mandals from Bhadrachalam division. The Chief Minister promised to take a final decision on the issue as per people’s wish, the MLC said.
