Warangal: In the wake of rising cases of eve-teasing and crime against women, the Warangal Commissionerate Police, who hitherto dealt with soft hands, seem to be upping the ante against the stalkers.
Notwithstanding the initiatives such as SHE teams, WhatsApp and Hawk Eye, a mobile app, letting the denizens in distress to contact the cops and get the assistance, the Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu still thinks that there is a need for tackling the eve-teasing issue much more effectively.
Apparently, the Commissioner has another plan up his sleeve to create safe environment for women. This time around, he came up with Swashakti programme to impart different self-defence techniques to create a sense of security and prevent harassment among the college girls and women.
As part of the initiative, the police have engaged the services of an eminent martial arts expert to impart self-defence techniques to at least 3,000 women and college girls.
“Though we have beefed up the She teams extending their services to Rural Warangal and Janagaon districts, the need of the hour is to make women feel confident,” Sudheer Babu told The Hans India, stating that a bit of self-defence proficiency would do wonders to the confidence of the women and girls.
He said that those women willing to attend the one-day training camp of Swashakti which will be held on December 21 have to register their names online on http://www.sheteamwarangal.com/ website.
Since the launch of She teams in Commissionerate area one-and-a-half-year ago, the police have received 520 complaints of eve-teasing cases. Of them, 130 are minors and they were let off with a warning and counseling in the presence of their parents.
The others were booked under Section 50 of the City Police Act and eve teasing. This apart, the police booked 15 persons under Nirbhaya Act.It’s learnt that police are likely to open rowdy-sheet against the habitual offenders who found refusing to mend their ways.
