Hyderabad: Congress party staged a walkout from the Assembly on Wednesday protesting against Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s rejection to waive the farm loans at one go.

Leader of the Opposition K Jana Reddy stated that even though they had repeatedly demanded that the government waive the loans at one go, the government had refused to accept their demand and hence his party was walking out of the Assembly in protest.

Eariler, the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao categorically stated that it was the policy of the TRS government to write off the loan in four instalments.

He said he had promised to look into the issue of waiver at one go if FRBM rules were relaxed, lands were sold and government got Rs 4,500 crore arrears of Commercial Taxes, but after the demonetisation the financial position of the government had suffered and they were yet to know the exact impact.

In this backdrop, it would not be possible for the government to waive the loans at one go.KCR said the loan waiver would be completed in the next budget and promised that the government would take care of the interest being charged by the banks on the loans.

He said while Telugu Desam government in Andhra Pradesh had paid Rs 11,000 crore towards loan waiver, Telangana paid Rs 12,000 crore.

Speaking on the input subsidy, he said the amount released by the Centre towards it was diverted for the works to ensure water supply in March and April of this year and recently Rs 300 crore had been released as input subsidy.

He said that remaining Rs 400 crores would be released soon. He said it was unfortunate on the part of the Congress party staging a walkout even after he had given satisfactory replies to their demands.

Minister for Agriculture Pocharam Srinivas Reddy on Wednesday said the State government was issuing timely loans to the farmers and added that the TRS government was committed for the welfare of farmers.

The Minister said the state government was promoting drip irrigation as part of its encouraging micro irrigation in the State. He said the government had also set up soil testing centers to help farmers.

The government was providing 90 per cent subsidy for farmers from backward classes, small and medium farmers while other farmers were being provided 80 per cent subsidy to purchase mechanised farm equipment.
