Execution of major irrigation projects may be delayed because of hurdles in the way of land acquisition

Hyderabad: In view of persisting problem in the land acquisition, the Telangana State government has altered its plan of action in regard to execution of the irrigation projects during 2017-18. The government would slow down the execution of major projects which required acquisition of huge tracts of land. It has decided to complete the ongoing projects for which 50 per cent of work was executed.

Palamuru Ranga Reddy lift irrigation scheme , Dindi, Kaleshwaram, Tummidihatti, Medigadda, Chanaka Korata and Sita Rama Lift Irrigation works would be put on hold until the land acquisition is completed. These projects, which have been conceived in the united Andhra Pradesh and redesigned by Telangana State government, require huge chunks of land to complete the projects.

Top officials of the State Irrigation Department told The Hans India that the department had furnished all the details of the land required to the Revenue Department which is the official agency for land acquisition. But delay in disbursement of compensation and rehabilitation to the displaced persons was delaying the process of land acquisition.

In all, it requires nearly 60,000 to 70,000 acres of land to complete the major irrigation projects. So far, only 25,000 acres of land has been acquired. In some cases, the process cannot be taken up unless forest and environmental clearances are given by the Centre. The Palamuru lift projects has already been hit after the National Green Tribunal ( NGT) stayed project works until environmental clearances are sought.

Meanwhile, the government decided to complete the works of 36 ongoing projects which at different stages construction. Works at 16 major projects which includes SRSP stage- 2, Sripadasagar – Yellampalli, Kaleshwaram lift project, Indiramma sagar, Kalwakurthi, Neettempadu, Bheema and Koilsagar would be completed on fast pace.

The medium irrigation projects Kinnerasani, Palem, Modikuntavagu, Gollavagu , Ralivagu, Komarambheem project and Gaddenna- Suddavagu projects and modernization projects – Nizam Sagar and Nagarjuna Sagar would be completed by the end of this year. Officials said that budget allocations for each projects in the ensuing 2017-18 would also be earmarked depending on the status of the project works.
