Mahbubnagar: About 108 Muslim families in the district received their long dues of Shadi Mubarak cheques distributed by MLA Srinivas Goud on Tuesday at Ambedkar Kala Bhavan here.
The Shadi Mubarak scheme was envisaged by the State government to financially support Muslim families for marriages of their first girl children after they reach their marriage age by paying Rs 51,000 for the purpose.
Another similar scheme Kalyana Laxmi was also launched to help support marriage of girls of poor families in the Hindu community.
“Irrespective of cast or religion, the State government is implementing many welfare schemes for minorities and Hindus. Particularly the Shadi Mubarak and Kalyanalaxmi schemes are launched with a novel thought of supporting the poor families financially during the marriage of their first girl child.
The aim of this scheme is that no parent should think that their girls are a burden. And this aid will help to meet their financial expenses during marriage,” said Srinivas Goud.
However, after the launch of this scheme with much fanfare, it has faced many hurdles as many middlemen and brokers who colluded with the officials and opened doors of corruption.
In many cases, one family got two beneficiaries and even ineligible persons were got benefited under this scheme while the true beneficiaries were ignored.
Having understood the discrepancies in the implementation of this scheme, the State government had conducted detailed investigations by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) and suspended some of the officials and booked cases against the middlemen and brokers who duped gullible poor minorities.
“I thank the government for helping me financially for my elder daughter’s marriage. This scheme has really helped the poor Muslim families like us.
Earlier the middle men and brokers demanded bribes up to Rs 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 for getting our application selected for the scheme. In many cases, they duped the poor families and misguided us for their self gains.
At least now the government realised this and is now distributing the cheques through Tahasildars with detailed verification of beneficiaries,” said Afreen Begum, mother of a Shadi Mubarak beneficiary.
To do away with corruption in this scheme, the State government has now entrusted the Mandal Revenue Officials to conduct thorough inquiry and investigation before selecting the right beneficiary.
“Because of complaints of fraud and corruption, the government had entrusted the Wakf Board to identify the beneficiaries and the revenue officials will conduct a final inquiry before selecting the beneficiaries.
Today, about 108 eligible beneficiaries have been selected for this scheme under Shadi Mubarak, for which we are distributing the cheques,” informed Mohammad Maqsood, Member Secretary, Wakf Board, Mahbubnagar.
