The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) can now issue heavy motor driving licence, thanks to the Skill India initiative of the government of India.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) can now issue heavy motor driving licence, thanks to the Skill India initiative of the government of India. According to RTC officials, the corporation can now train the drivers in its driving testing tracks in the Transport Academy on the outskirts of the city.

The officials said the Union government had started Skill Development Ministry and had been encouraging different institutions to impart skills to the youth. The Central government has been giving funds to run the institution and also authorise the institutions to issue certificates.

A senior official said the Centre had communicated the corporation to initiate training of the heavy motor driving for the needy people. “The corporation has enough infrastructures in the academy to train drivers and it has been doing it for years and the track record of shows that,” said the official.

According to the officials, the RTC has 0.07 per cent of accident rate, which is the lowest in the country and the accidents had decreased during the last two years. There are 20,870 drivers out of the 50,000 staff and 25 per cent of the drivers were not involved in any accidents. During 2014-15 there were 968 accidents and 380 deaths and during 2015-16 there were 827 accidents and 348 deaths, which show decrease in accidents.

With the new initiative of the Skill Development Ministry, the corporation would get funds for running the institute and it can provide good training, food and stay at the academy.

The Centre would sponsor for the expenses on the trainees and also provide some royalty to the corporation, said the officials. The official said that the Central funds can be utilised to increase the infrastructure in the academy like getting simulators and other equipments.
