Hyderabad: The Telangana government is planning to include third gender persons into the pension net. Replying to a question raised by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA Gongidi Sunitha and others during Question Hour in State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Panchayat Raj Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said there was a proposal to provide monthly pensions to third gender persons.

He also informed that the guidelines for giving financial assistance to single women were under preparation and monthly pensions would be released from April onwards. The Minister said social security pensions, under Aasara Scheme, were being given to 35,56,315 people.

They include old age (13,17,690); widow (13,19,922); disabled (4,50,682); toddy tappers (57,041); weavers (33,980); HIV patients (30,487) and financial assistance to 3,46,513 beedi workers.

He informed the House that separate boards were constituted for all 31 districts to conduct tests for the applicants of physically handicapped pensions. Of nearly 9.33 lakh physically handicapped persons, nearly 6 lakh were found eligible for monthly pensions. Of them, about 4.50 lakh are getting the monthly pension assistance.

Krishna Rao said the State government was spending about Rs 5,000 per year on Aasara pensions. He said unlike previous Congress and TDP regimes when the pension amount was mere Rs 70-200, the TRS government had increased the amount to Rs 1,000-1500. He said that the government was in talks with the Postal Department to provide pension to people living in far off areas at their door step.

He said bio-metric system would be introduced soon to prevent any irregularities in distribution of pension. MLAs including G Sunitha and Konda Surekha of TRS, T Jeevan Reddy of Congress and Sunnam Rajaiah of CPI (M) also spoke.
