Nagarkurnool: They did not wait for someone to deliver the goods. They tightened their belts and planted one lakh saplings a decade ago. They did not stop at that. They practised organic farming, built individual toilets, made provision for drinking water supply and developed the village working shoulder to shoulder with the objective of making the village a model one in the undivided Mahbubnagar district.
The model village that is much talked about in terms of development is Silarpalli in Kalwakurthy mandal of the district. The village has 190 houses with a population of 700, of them 550 are voters. Villagers in general and the Thagore Youth Association in particular strove for the village’s development.
The plantation drive launched 10 years ago is now bearing fruit. The village has a cool climate and there is greenery all around the village; thanks to the plantation drive. Avenue plantation and idols of Swami Vivekananda and that of Mahatma Gandhi greet visitors.
Visitors come across trees in all houses – big and small – in the village. Even those who live in thatched houses planted saplings all round their hut. The villagers are planting saplings during the rainy season and protecting them during summer.
There are at least 7,000 plants nestled 200 homes each house has at least 15 to 20 trees. The village has become synonymous with cleanliness and greenery besides. The trees display names of those who have planted and nursed them. They also feature green slogans. There are coconut, guava, jamun, lemon and other horticultural trees among the rows of houses. Each house has an individual sanitary latrine.
The village, which has prohibited garbage disposal in public and has pure drinking water, constituted committees to resolve disputes. Other significant committees are: committees to celebrate fairs and festivals, to perform bhajans, to oversee sanitation and other issues.
The youth association played a crucial role in the village’s development. The association started a drinking water scheme. The association members explain women on the need to grow vegetables in their homes.
The youth are perturbed by the officials’ attitude who refused to give them saplings as part of the Harita Haram programme.
