Hyderabad: Adding a new dimension to its prestigious Telanganaku Haritha Haram (THH) programme, the State government has decided to distribute 15 core teak and 15 lakh palm plants during the ensuing rainy seasons to give a big boost to rural economy. The targeted groups for the distribution of teak plans include farmers and people belonging to weaker sections. The reason behind the decision, according to officials, is that the teak has economic value in the market and it helps provide additional income source to farmers and those from the marginal sections of the society.

As part of the scheme the Forest Department has been asked to prepare an action plan to plant about 1.2 crore teak plants in the rain shadow Mahbubnagar district. Out of this, the Forest Department will distribute 80 lakh plants and the District Rural Development Department will provide 40 lakh plants to farmers belonging to weaker sections,” said a Forest official.Similar, activity will be replicated in other districts in the State with an objective of providing additional source of income to the farmers and weaker sections. The scheme has been designed as it will address the issues of green cover as well as creating an asset value to the people.

That apart, steps will also be taken to raise palm plants (Phoenix sylvestris) in the rain shadow districts like Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar. In Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda alone the Forest Department is expected to supply about 15 lakh silver date palm, the sources added.Called locally as 'Eetha,' the silver date palm from which ‘kallu’ (toddy) is extracted, was banned in some districts because of adulteration menace. The Forest Department is planning to revive it. It is against this backdrop that the Forest and Excise have been directed by the government to plan for extensive plantation of the silver date palm. By encouraging local brew (toddy) the government intends to curb illicit liquor in the districts.
