Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Bonthu Rammohan on Monday flagged off five e-Taxis. The initiative is aimed at promoting pollution free environment. The electrical cars, being promoted by the GHMC, will be run between the Airport and city.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said the Green Mile company has tied up with GMR to establish a charging station at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).

Initially the company will run five e-Taxis, from different places in the city to the Airport, for three months and then the company may increase the fleet strength to 50 to 100 in the coming days, the Mayor said.

The Mayor said the initiative was successfully being implemented by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation and it had significantly helped in reducing pollution in the national capital.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said although the electric car is a bit costly but the cost of its maintenance is comparative low. While a diesel vehicle runs for 1 km in about Rs 4 to Rs 5, the electric car costs only one rupee for each kilometre.

The function was also addressed by HMR MD N V S Reddy, Government Advisors G Vivek and Papa Rao, Corporator Vijaya Reddy, IT Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan and other senior officials.
