Hyderabad: The State government is mulling to bring a new law in place of the existing Urban Areas Development Act which was enacted in the undivided State of Andhra Pradesh.According to the officials of the State Municipal Administration and Urban Development department, the new Act is expected to boost planned development covering all urban and quasi-urban areas, and will enable the districts to formulate an overall uniform development plan.

Once the new Act comes into force, each district will have a special master plan for development. The sources said urban planning had now become the main focus of the government besides certain proposed public private partnership (PPP) projects like metro rail, etc, which are underway. While the zonal development plans for cities like Hyderabad are being prepared, the same kind of focus is not being laid on regional planning.

Also, lack of sufficient staff was added to the neglect of this component, the sources added. However, several urban areas in the State are witnessing rapid growth following large number of people migrating to these areas. As a result, regional planning assumes significance on a par with any other municipal corporation and urban local bodies in the State.

It is against this backdrop that the newly proposed Act would take care of the issues of regional planning with the preparation of special plans for the development of districts and there would be one Urban and Regional Planning Act covering the entire State. As part of the initiative, the Country and Town Planning Department had already selected Kothagudem for preparation of a district-level plan on a pilot basis, said Director of Town and Country Planning, K Ananda Babu, while speaking to The Hans India on Tuesday.

The department has already completed geo-spatial maps for 37 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) which would be placed in the public domain after taking the approval from the State government. Besides, he said the department had already prepared plans for 200 villages out of the 8,000 villages and 500 mandal headquarters. In addition, the department was also designing master plans for Nizamabad and Bhainsa, Babu added.

Furthermore, all the plans prepared by the department will be in GIS mode. Once the data is placed on the public domain, people would be able to access it and raise objections, if any. He said that steps would be taken to finalise the new plans after taking into consideration the objections raised by the people.
