Sangareddy: At a time when the Excise officials are waging an all-out war on drugs in Sangareddy district, the latest announcement by SP Chandrashekar Reddy to issue stickers to Akshayapatra vehicles which supply Midday Meal Scheme (MMS) in various schools in the district has raised a few eyebrows among local journalists.

SP Chandrasekhar Reddy spoke to the media here on Saturday. He said that many people who work in ordnance factory, Akshayapatra scheme and some other firms were complaining that their vehicles were being stopped by traffic police to verify their documents at busy times and the process was creating unnecessary delay in carrying-out their work.

To prevent this inconvenience, the district police has come up with the idea of stickers with the SP’s signature pasted on the windshield of the vehicles so that from now on traffic police wouldn’t stop them for checking. However, the drivers have to get checked the documents by district police before the issue of stickers, he clarified. The stickers are valid only up to a specified period and have to be reissued after verification of documents again. These stickers could be obtained by journalists as well.

Answering to a query raised by this reporter, the SP said that Excise Department officers could carry-out their jobs as usual as the issue of stickers is not meant to impede their work of checking of vehicle. The reporter brought to the notice of the SP that even in the past some vehicles of some organisations were used to transport illegal substances.

Narayankhed and Zaheerabad were the gateways for inter-State drug supply to connect to Patancheru, from where it could be easily transported to other places in city. Some of the journalists present felt that this move of issuing stickers was like handing-over the keys to thieves and was uncalled for.
