Hyderabad: Security for Director of Excise Enforcement Akun Sabharwal will be enhanced, if need be, according to Director General of Police Anurag Sharma.

Anurag Sharma on Saturday acknowledged that Sabharwal has been threatening calls. The callers, he said, have been using voice over internet protocol (VOIP) system to make the threatening calls. The police had launched manhunt for those making the calls.

Police suspect that the threatening calls could be originating from Hyderabad and Bengaluru or Goa. It may be recalled that Sabharwal has been spearheading the probe into drug racket involving senior employees of several MNCs, students of reputed educational institutions and people from the entertainment industry.

Since the probe has been creating ripples in the film industry and Sabharwal has reiterated his commitment to tackle the drug menace with an iron hand, drug mafia appears to have stepped to derail the investigation.

Sources said the accent of the callers indicated that they were Africans. It is interesting to note here that people of African origin living in India have been allegedly increasingly involved in drug peddling and some of them could be resorting to dirty tricks.
