Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) general secretary Dr Dasoju Sravan strongly objected to the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) choosing Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to confer Agriculture Leadership Award and called it the ‘joke of the millennium and the height of hypocrisy.’

In a release issued here on Sunday, he suspected the credentials of the ICFA, a dubious body, which he charged with protecting the interests of the seed companies lobbying with various governments. Also, he doubted whether there was any nexus among seed firms, ICFA and K Chandrashekar Rao.

Sravan said it was ridiculous that Governor Narasimhan certified the ICFA as a government of India’s organisation and the award was instituted by the Centre. He sought a rejoinder from the Raj Bhavan to the contrary. To appease Chandrashekar Rao, the Governor might not have verified the facts, he averred.

The ICFA might have vested interest in grating the award to K Chandrashekar Rao, but he should be sensible to accept the award from a private firm, he said and advised the Chief Minister to make some introspection on whether he was truly eligible for the award.

He alleged that K Chandrashekar Rao was attempting to camouflage in order to cover up his failures in the farm sector and hence stage-managed the award.

He said Chandrashekar Rao’s loan waiver scheme was a farce as it waived only the interest. Lakhs of farmers had mortgaged their land and gold ornaments to raise loans and the poor farmers were struggling to get loans, he noted. Chandrashekar Rao was not kind enough to console bereaved families of farmers in his constituency, where the total number of suicide deaths of farmers in the State was 3,500, he alleged. He blamed the government for not awarding ex gratia and social security support to the bereaved families.

The government failed to set up market intervention fund and manage the adverse impact of market price fluctuations on food crops. “We have great respect for scientist MS Swaminathan, a pioneer of Green Revolution. But, certainly, we object to presenting the award to K Chandrashekar Rao,” he said pointing out that the Chief Minister’s lopsided policies caused distress to farmers.
