Hyderabad: In order to meet the surging demand and to supply power to customers without interruption, the Telangana State Transmission Corporation (TS Transco) has decided to buy 500 MW power from energy producers.

The Transco invited bids from the power sellers to supply 500 MW power from September 11 to October 18 in view of the festivals. They also anticipate increase in demand as rains would recede during this period. The last date to file the bids has been fixed on September 6.

After introduction of round-the-clock-power to the agriculture in three districts, the power distribution companies have been facing huge demand for power. The demand has crossed 9800 MW per day and the consumption has gone up to 194 MUs per day.

As there were no rains in the first three weeks of August, the demand for power has risen in domestic and agriculture sectors. The Discoms purchased power from the power exchange up to 2,500 MWs per day. This has put lot of financial burden on them.

In view of this, they bought power on short term basis about 500 MW from the power sellers in August and came to a decision to continue purchasing power on short term basis in September also. As there is no water inflows into the reservoirs, the hydroelectric power stations could not be put to use. The Discoms have been forced to depend on thermal and solar power. The Genco has been producing about 40 MUs per day with its thermal stations. The Discoms have been procuring power from the Genco, Singareni TPS, Central Power Generation Stations and from solar power parks.

The consumption of power came down in the last week of August due to heavy rains and is now hovering around 160 MUs per day. However, the officials are expecting that demand would pick up again in September and October with the ongoing agriculture activities. The demand would also rise due to the festivals like Dasara and Diwali in September and October.

Transco officials have been hoping that they could meet any amount of demand in the power sector once the new thermal power units begin production and are of the view that short term purchasing is inevitable till then. They have scheduled the start of power generation in the new stations to March.

Once winter season begins, demand would come down in the domestic sector and with the end of Kharif season, consumption of power would also come down in the agriculture sector bye end of October.
