GHMC bags National Tourism Award

Hyderabad is a historic city noted for its many monuments, temples, mosques and bazaars. A multitude of influences has shaped the present characteristic of the city in the last 400 years. Open urination is an area of concern, especially at tourist places. It is not enough to provide adequate number of toilets at tourist places. Their maintenance is important. Unless, the toilets are neat and tidy, people do not show interest to use them. They make use of the adjacent open space for urination. The city has well maintained toilets at various places for men, women and disabled. Hyderabad has come up with an innovative perception. Public and tourists can avail toilets at restaurants and petrol pumps (fuel filling stations).
Another issue is access of toilets to women, as they generally reluctant to use common toilets. From this perspective emerged the idea of establishing exclusive toilets for the use of women. The GHMC has taken the Pilot initiative at the vicinity of Historic Charminar, where a swanky “She Toilet” outlet has been arranged for the exclusive use of women.
Hyderabad, as a global city, equipped with modern toilets like e- toilets, prefabricated Public Toilets, etc., within 50 to 100 mts of the tourist destinations and within the premises at a few places.
GHMC has 359 toilets and another 583 toilets are pooled in collaboration with private resources. Thus tourists touring in Hyderabad are provided with basic service of sanitation.
GHMC has inducted 2000 Swachh Auto Tippers to collect waste from Door to Door in residential areas, commercial area, public and semi-public areas, religious places etc., tourist places are also covered with Swachh Autos on day to day basis.
Adequate drinking water facilities are provided at the tourist places by the department of Tourism and Water Supply Board for public to use. Altogether, there are 2,448 public hand post and 935 water hand post in religious area and major tourist destinations. The GHMC is taking special efforts to maintain sanitation and upkeep of roads leading to the tourist destinations. Special Pin Point Programmes are prepared indicating the specific worker wise allotment of road stretches.
