Hyderabad: TRS legislator from Vemulawada Assembly constituency Dr Chennamaneni Ramesh has knocked on the doors of the High Court at Hyderabad challenging the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, cancelling his Indian citizenship.

As is known, a joint secretary of the Ministry issued orders on September 5 cancelling the MLA’s Indian citizenship. Ramesh made the Home Ministry, Government of India, Telangana Home Secretary and Rajanna Siricilla District Collector as respondents.

Ramesh contended in his petition that he got his Indian citizenship back after returning from Germany as per Section 5(1) of The Citizenship Act. The Act mandates that objections can be raised on the citizenship within 30 days; but in this case, A Srinivas, who contested against him on BJP ticket, has raised objection after a long time.

Ramesh found fault with the Home Ministry taking up that complaint despite the delay. He also contended that citizenship can be cancelled only when a person is involved in anti-national activity that can affect the unity and integrity of the country.

He also complained that the Committee Report on the complaint made by A Srinivas was not served on him. He sought the intervention of the High Court in quashing the order of the Joint Secretary, Home Ministry Government of India cancelling his citizenship. The petition is likely to come up for hearing on Monday.
