Hyderabad: After an unusual dry spell for a week, the sudden heavy downpour overnight has left many low-lying areas inundated and streets stagnated with knee-deep rain water in the State capital.

Many colonies in the low lying areas, especially in Nacharam and Uppal were waterlogged while roads and streets in Panjagutta, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Secunderabad, Uppal, Boduppal, Mehdipatnam, LB Nagar, RTC Cross Roads and other areas were inundated with overflowing rain water. Water draining works had begun early in the morning in the low-lying colonies of Uppal. Yet, due to heavy rains, the flow of water into the houses of Swaroop Nagar Colony kept increasing. Uppal Corporator Anala Reddy explained that the rescue operations had begun in the early hours and went on until the afternoon.

She further added that out of the 30 feet width for the nalas in Uppal, most of the land is encroached and only 10 feet of width is left. This is the reason for the overflowing of nala near Bharatnagar colony. ``We had placed repeated complaints in the past in this regard to the concerned authorities and there was no response.” she said.

Areas lying near Nalla Cheruvu also were heavily affected due to overflowing water from the lakes. A couple of hours after the rainfall had begun; the pipelines leading towards the lake were blocked and started overflowing. Local residents expressed their concern regarding the blocked pipelines. ``We place complaints almost every year in the Uppal GHMC office. Yet, no actions were ever taken”, said one of the local residents.

With most of the roads flooding and logging with drainage water, the city faced heavy traffic jam in areas like Secunderabad, RTC Cross Roads, Begumpet, Panjagutta, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, etc., during the early hours. “The roads are only getting worse with every rainfall”, said a commuter on Hubsiguda Road under the newly constructed metro rail station, where the road has broken further due to the rainfall.

A city bus got stuck in the overflowing knee-deep water in Nacharam. Five passengers were travelling in the bus when it got stuck in the overflowing rain water.

The Municipal authorities, on receipt of information, rushed to the spot and pulled out the bus using a crane. GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy initiated relief and rescue operations by pressing into service all monsoon emergency teams.

The emergency teams and field staff launched a massive operation of clearing the stagnated rain water in many areas. The GHMC authorities also kept many teams on standby to take up any emergency relief work. The overnight rainfall recorded at various places ranged between 6 cm to 11 cm, with Nacharam receiving the highest rainfall.
