Hyderabad: Academic institutions and the youth can come up with innovations and new research to help the country grow technologically, G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri, said here on Sunday. Highlighting the country's achievements in the areas of defence, space and others, he, however, said a lot more needs to be done.

India is among the few countries in the world to have the capability to intercept an incoming missile, he said, speaking at the 19th Convocation of University of Hyderabad (UoH) here, he said the academic institutions need to promote research and the students should come up with innovations and be entrepreneurs, he said.

"You (students) need to come up innovative ideas... (There can be) small start-ups with specific ideas," he said. He cited the example of an ambitious youth from Coimbatore who bagged a project with the ISRO for the youth to come forward with new ideas.

Acknowledging the contributions of industry and research and development organisations, Satheesh Reddy urged them to take up research in a big way for the country to grow.

Emphasising on the need of the partnership of private entrepreneurs, he said that once there were only six suppliers and now their number had gone beyond 600. The University of Hyderabad was working along with DRDO in developing many defence systems, he said.

Among all the sectors, three sectors Atomic energy, Space and Research held the key to all-round development of the country. The atomic energy sector is bound to add about 30,000 MW of power generation capacity. The space sector of the country has achieved a lot and has grown from the SLVs to GSLVs.

Chancellor of UoH and eminent economist C Rangarajan presented degrees in various disciplines to the students on the occasion. UoH Vice-Chancellor Apparao Podile, in his address, said 1,421 students graduated this year and that 229 among them.

"This year 1,421 students are graduating and of these 229 are Ph.Ds. This brings the total number of Ph.Ds produced at the UoH to 2,485 and the number of graduating students since the time of its inception to 26,885," he said.
