New Delhi: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra and comprising Justice Chandrachud and Justice Khanwilkar, here on Friday disposed a petition seeking a ban on the controversial book of Kancha Ilaiah.

The book which is based on the trading community. The panel observed that it could not interfere with the freedom of speech and thought of any individual in the country.

Seeking to know why anyone should take a serious note of some writing, myth or a view point, the panel said it could not interfere because of Article 32 of the Constitution. It was upto the government to judge the writings and make a decision, the bench told the petitioner Veeranjaneyulu, who said the sentiments of his community were hurt by the
writings.

The Vysya community leaders of the Telugu States have demanded that the book should be banned as it refers the community in disparaging manner as ‘Komatollu’ and brands them as smugglers.

Some of them have gone ahead and warned Ilaiah of the consequences. Rallies and counter rallies have also been witnessed in the two States with Ilaiah getting the support of the left, liberal, Maoists and Dalits against the Vysya groups.
