Hyderabad: Even as the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is bracing up for a big launch of first phase of Metro Rail in city, there persists a serious problem un-addressed by the authorities.
There is no proper space for parking for the future commuters of Metro Rail at most of the Metro Stations in city completed or half completed so far. Wherever the station is completed, Metro authorities are focusing more on shopping complexes and other constructions; but they seem least bothered about parking space.
Each Metro Rail carries 4 to 6 bogies and approximately 250 or 300 passengers. There is a possibility that half of the passengers come to the Metro Stations on their four wheelers or two wheelers. The HMRL has provided large parking space at Nagole and Mettuguda, but other stations enroute to Kukatpally lack parking place.
However, a proposal was made for a multi-level parking near Nampally Metro Station by the authorities. There are two Metro Stations at a close distance and it is a traffic jam prone area for a long time. However, there is no progress on this parking lot so far. Lok Satta activist B Sambi Reddy said that it was the responsibility of HMRL to provide proper parking space before it starts operations in Hyderabad.
He said, ``What we believe is that HMRL wanted to charge commuters additionally for the parking spaces. It is their responsibility to provide parking for two-wheelers and four wheelers at all the Metro stations in city.”
People are already vexed up with the loot of commercial complexes in the name of parking charges in city and it is the duty of the GHMC to look into this matter, he lamented. When HMRL can come up with parking spaces for their commercial complexes, why could not they give parking space at stations, he questioned.
Urban transport experts opine that providing parking for the commuters must be the first priority of the agency in order to ease the vehicular movement on roads. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to formally inaugurate first phase of HMRL in Hyderabad on November 27 this year. However, the agency seems not ready with all the required logistics.
It is to be noted that HMRL has planned to come up with more multi-level parking areas in besides Nampally and other than those of GHMC parking lots. Authorities from HMRL could not be reached for a comment on the issue.
