Hyderabad: The South Zone police on Monday arrested three accused including the father of a four-month-old baby girl for selling her to a Vizianagaram-based couple for Rs 2 lakh. After rescuing her from Kothavalasa village of the district, the city police handed over the baby to her mother on Monday. According to the police, the mother of the infant, Sabila Begum, was approached by a woman named Shaik Khatoon on pretext of adoption. Stricken by poverty, Sabila Begum, wife of an auto driver Yousuf, agreed to give her newborn baby girl for adoption, under the pressure of her husband in the month of September. However, to her utter shock, she came to know that Khatoon had sold away her daughter in Andhra Pradesh.

During the investigation, it came to light that the infant’s father was directly involved in the deal with a broker, V Gangadhar Reddy, who agreed to provide him ample money. But both Gangadhar and Khatoon had failed to satisfy him, prompting him to approach police station along with his wife. When the accused were interrogated, it came light that Gangadhar, Khatoon and another accused Sirisha (absconding) were linked to infertility clinics in Hyderabad. Gangadhar and Sirisha acted as the biological parents of the baby. With the help of Ratna Kumari (based in AP and absconding), they approached P Parvathi and P Nageswara Rao (a Railway employee), a childless couple living in Kothavalasa village in Vizianagaram.

As per the agreement, Parvathi and Nageswara Rao were asked to fulfil the legal formalities. The accused also told them that they would be handing over the baby for a two-month period and if they took care of the baby well, then they would give legal adoption. On that, they agreed and gave Rs 1,70,000 to the accused and promised to pay the remaining amount of Rs 30,000 at the time of legal adoption. “The accused shared the spoils, but Yousuf was not satisfied, hence he asked her wife to file a complaint in the police station,” said DCP (South Zone), V Satyanarayana.

A special team was sent to AP that rescued the baby from Kothavalasa with the assistance of the Vijayanagaram police and handed over to biological mother. “We are also verifying the role of social mother and father, if anything comes forth, necessary action will be taken against them,” said DCP. The police arrested V Gangadhar Reddy, 32, agent at Sai Kiran & OASIS Hospital, Banjara Hills, Shaik Khatoon, 41 and Shaik Yousuf, 27 (father of the baby). Notices were also served to Sai Kiran Hospital, Oasis Hospital, Nova Hospital, (Banjara Hills), Padmaja Hospital (Bhongir), Anu Hospital (Somajiguda) and Rama Infertility Centre (Visakhapatnam).
