Hyderabad: The upcoming elections to Gram Panchayats would be the first general election in Telangana state as no other general election has been conducted in the past four years after formation of the state to Assembly, Lok Sabha, rural and urban local bodies.

The official machinery is gearing up for the elections and it is eager to prove its mettle by successfully holding the elections. The government officers and staff are preparing for the elections under the guidance of State Election Commission for the GP polls.

The Panchayat Raj officials have completed all the arrangements for the elections like revision of voter list, their ward-wise division, enumeration of BC voters, identification of polling stations, procurement of election material and others.

The officials are ready to begin the election process as soon as the SEC announces the schedule. They would swing into action with issuing notification to the elections to the GPs.

Elections to the GPs have assumed significance not only as first general election but also in terms of size of the official machinery. According to sources as many as 1.20 lakh staff is needed to handle each phase.

The officials informed that each polling station requires about 3 officials to conduct the polls. There are about 1.13 lakh polling stations and the required number of staff is estimated at 3.39 lakhs. With this the SEC officials have decided to conduct the elections in three phases.

Each phase would require about 1.20 lakh poll staff and equal number of police personnel to maintain the law and order. The higher ups of the government have been searching all the means to procure enough staff for the polls.

Though the officials of Telangana are not new to elections, holding general election is a first of its kind in the newly formed state. The earlier general elections to Lok Sabha, Assembly, urban and rural local bodies have been held during the combined state period, before June 2, 2014.

State Election Commission officials, collectors, Panchayat Raj officials and police personnel have enough experience in holding the elections and they are confident that the upcoming polls to GPs would be conducted without any problem.

As all statutory requirements are in place, the officials have put focus on allotment of staff to the polling stations. They said that about one week time is required between each phase to move the staff from one place to another.

The election process may spread into three to four weeks starting in the first week of July. The results would be announced by the end of that month and officials are firms to ensure that new bodies are in place by the time of end of term of the present ones.
