Khammam : The ‘Scientific Temper Day’ was observed under the Jana Vignana Vedika here at Priyadarshini Degree College in Khammam on Monday.
Attending as a chief guest, Prof. Katta Sathya Prasad said that the Scientific Temper Day will be observed in memory of the rationalist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar who was killed on August 20 in 2013 to promote rationality, scientific thought and innovation.
He said that the scientific temper is a way of life which uses the scientific method and is highly useful for development of nation and which may consequently include questioning, observing physical reality, testing, hypothesizing, analysing and communicating involving logical applications.
We live in a society that is completely dependent on science and technology. Hence, if you do not have a scientific temper and mind to understand technology, the latest technology might seem like magic and which would not be healthy for upcoming generations, he said.
One is free to believe anything he or she wants, as long as those are personal beliefs. The problem starts when they start assigning scientific attributes to these beliefs. It is particularly dangerous when someone in a position of importance makes such claims. It does more harm to the history of science in India, he added.
The heavy and unseasonal rains that we are witnessing now-a-days across the globe is due to not developing of scientific temper among us. If this continues, then the survival of mankind may become difficult on the planet earth in the coming days, he cautioned.
