Woolen wear sales spike as temp drops

Chaderghat: Following dip in mercury levels for the past few days, the merchants of woolen clothing on the banks of Musi were seen making brisk business. Besides Assamese businessmen the natives of Nepal and Tibet cleared-off bulk of their stocks during the last three days.
Ever since weather changed and due to sudden decrease in temperature, the sale of the woolen clothing and leather jackets has seen increase. Unable to cope with recent effect of cyclone Phethai, people started rushing towards these kiosks traditionally selling sweaters. Huge rush was seen in the last couple of days on the kiosks installed on the stretch between Chaderghat to Afzalgunj. Purchases of sweaters, jackets, hand gloves, facemasks soared at the stalls close to MGBS, Chaderghat and Gowliguda. Hoards of customers were also seen in other localities of Old City like Babanagar, Phisalbanda, Bandlaguda, besides Malakpet.
Besides woolen sweaters, youth preferred buying imported jackets both original leather and synthetic, owing to drastic change in temperature which touched 15 degrees. “The woolens sweaters which are manufactured in Tibet, Nepal and imported leather jackets of China and other countries are in high demand.” said Ravi, a vendor and Native of Arunachal Pradesh. According to vendors, many of the young customers are preferring quality sweaters and jackets to ensure they remain warm.
“The price of the imported woolen sweaters starts from Rs 800 to Rs 1800 and the normal sweaters range from Rs 300 to Rs 1000. While the imported leather jackets range starts from Rs 750 to Rs 3000 which is made up wool and leather (leather outside and wool inside) and the sweater shirt ranges between Rs 300 to Rs 800. Since the last 3 days there is a sudden dip in temperature, hence people preferring high range of jackets and woolen sweaters,” said Bahadur, another vendor, a native of Tibet. To protect the children from chilly weather, parents were seen purchasing the pure woolen clothes along with hand gloves, socks and facemask, he added.
