Nacharam: The Central government’s prestigious Swachh Survekshan-2019 programme has been showing tremendous impact in Nacharam division. Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in coordination with local residents, traders and people from various walks of life have been actively promoting the importance of cleanliness. They have been conducting awareness programmes by engaging cultural troupes and painters.

They have been concentrating on public places where people dispose of garbage and waste indiscriminately. They also focused on vacant lands where urination and open defecation was taking place. With the help of local grocery stores they painted the walls in the localities with slogans and rangoli promoting cleanliness. Apart from this, the officials depicted the names of the donors and their organisation on the art works.

By doing so, they were encouraging the traders to perform their social responsibility for a good cause. On other hand, it brought in extra income and livelihood to painters who have been striving for work with the entry of cheap flex printing in the advertising sector. The division is also well-equipped with separate bins for dry and wet garbage at every nook and corner of the streets. The locals are gradually becoming habitual to maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

They were also using the bins as an alternative to Swachh autos, when sanitation staff missed the routine. There are instances when children forced their parents to use these bins to dispose of the garbage such as wrappers of snacks, city bus tickets and flowers already used in their houses while performing puja and other rituals.

Earlier, during the functions, celebrations and rituals, the garbage consisting of paper plates, disposable glasses and leftover food used to be strewn at the corner of the streets. It led to unhygienic conditions like growth in mosquito population and foul smell. But, now due to the GHMC awareness drive, people started using Swachh autos and the newly-arranged twin bins.

The sanitation staff is also motivating the residents in converting the waste to organic fertilisers. There is a saying “cleanliness is next to godliness”. The Nacharam division has been reflecting the saying with well-coordinated effort between officials and local residents.
