He was 90. He was the Asthana Vidwan of TTD for over 20 years. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2010. President's Sangeeta Nataka Academy Award

He was born on August 4, 1923 in Anakapalli to Yegnachayanamma and Annapurneswara Sarma. His mother fostered his talent and gave him the basic training in music and she is the cause of his passion for music in his life. His father always motivated and encouraged him. He was the disciple of Mangalampalli Pattabhiramaiah, father of Balamurali Krishna. During administrative career spanning over four decades, Nookala has held various posts and positions.

He was professor Maharaja's Music College of Vizianagaram, Telugu University Hyderabad and Principal Govt. Music Colleges in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Tirupati. He is the Founder President of Viswakala Parishad and served as Expert Member in Andhra University, Madras Music Academy and Member Audition Board and Committee of All India Radio. He authored 12 books on musicology.
