Hanamkonda: Both college and university students should give equal priority to sports and academics, suggested Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor Prof R Sayanna. For an overall development of personality of the students at Kakatiya University, importance is being given to sports and games, besides ensuring quality of education, he said. The Vice-Chancellor addressed sportswomen at the launch of the South Zone Inter University Hand Ball Tournament for Women-2017 here.
Prof Sayanna hoisted the flag of All India Universities and declared the event open on Friday and witnessed guard of honour of presented by the players with an impressive march-past marching to tune of the sports band. The captains of the participating teams took an oath, promising a fair play with sportswomen spirit. The tournament, which began at Kakatiya University play fields on a colourful note, is being participated by the teams from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, including all the universities in Telangana.
Prof Sayanna informed that a Sports Hostel has been inaugurated to provide exclusive facilities to the players of the university. Participation in games and sports infuses a discipline, hard-working nature, dedication and fighting spirit. In addition to that, the players will be able to interact with those belonging to other states and learn their traditions and culture, the V-C said and urged the players to maintain game spirit, irrespective of winning or losing.
The KU Sports Board secretary and tournament organsing secretary Gade Phani said that elaborate arrangements have been made for the comfortable stay of the players. The tournament will continue till December 11 and the matches will be conducted on knock out basis. The winning teams will be selected for national tournament, he added.
University College Principal Prof T Ravinder Reddy, Telangana State Hand Ball Association President S Pavan Kumar, Physical Directors Association president Prof P Ramesh Reddy and its office bearer NA Jaichander, physical directors, coaches and managers took part in the inaugural ceremony.
The host Kakatiya University entered into the next round taking the advantage of walk-over as Vishweshwarayya Technology University, Belgavi in Karnataka did not report. The Osmania University team defeated JNTU, Kakinada team with 25-04 goals.
