Bhimavaram (West Godavari): Union Minister of State for Railways Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy launched the railway line doubling and electrification works here on Thursday.

The doubling of lines and electrification work on Vijayawada- Gudivada, Machilipatnam-Bhimavaram (via Gudivada) and Narsapuram-Nidadavole sections would be taken up at a cost of Rs 1503 crore.

The Minister, speaking on the occasion, said Andhra Pradesh was neglected by Railways so far. He said the State was being allotted a meager sum of Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore in the budget every year. Observing that there were 30 pending works in the State, he said it would take another 45 years to complete these works in the normal course with the existing finances available with the railways. He promised to expedite the works and complete the works within three years.

He said that railway coach factories would be established in Telangana and Rayalaseema regions of the State. A mineral water plant at a cost of Rs 20 crore was established at Vijayawada for the convenience of passengers, he said.

Mr Reddy said that modernisation of Railways would be taken up soon, making all modern amenities available to passengers. He claimed that nine express trains and 10 passenger trains were launched in the State after he assumed office as Railway Minister. Ten per cent women constables would be appointed on the railways for the convenience of women, he said.

He said that efforts were being made to introduce double-decker trains in the State and of Shatabdi Express train between Vijayawada and Hyderabad. Narsapuram Parliament Member Kanumuri Bapiraju, who presided over the meeting, held on the occasion at Bhimavaram railway station, said the doubling and electrification of lines would go a long way in the overall development of the region.

People's representatives of the region, railway officials, district officials, among others, participated in the programme.A The people in the delta areas of West Godavari district have been waiting for over a decade for the doubling and electrification works to begin.
