Twitter to display a message when trying to like a labelled tweet

Highlights

Twitter said requests for labelled tweets had helped reduce Tweets from misleading content quotes by 29%.

Twitter will soon display a warning if you tried to retweet a tweet that the company has labelled as misleading. The feature will begin rolling out for desktop and iOS users later this week. Android users will also receive the feature in the coming weeks.

When announcing the new functionality, Twitter said that such ads had decreased Tweets of misleading content quotes by 29%.

"Giving context on why a labelled Tweet is misleading under our election, COVID-19, and synthetic and manipulated media rules is vital. These prompts helped decrease Quote Tweets of misleading information by 29%, so we're expanding them to show when you tap to like a labelled Tweet," said Twitter.

This comes after social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook took additional steps to counter fake news, misinformation, and conspiracy theories during and after the US presidential elections. Twitter, in particular, took drastic measures such as tagging tweets it considers misleading. The company even went on to tag some of the tweets of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

That being said, social media platforms have faced criticism for failing to address the spread of false, misleading, and abusive content. Recently, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter's Jack Dorsey were questioned about the election response of US senators. Both CEOs defended their content moderation practices in a congressional hearing.
