Nizamabad: The Bonalu festival symbolises worship of nature, said District Collector MRR Rao while inaugurating the celebrations along with Zilla Parishad chairman Dadannagari Vithalrao in the city on Friday.

The Bonela celebrations were organised under the auspices of TNGOs at Jai Bhawani Durgamata Temple located near the Collectorate.

Bonam pots were brought in procession from the Amman Temple to the Collector's Office. The Collector and the chairman addressed the people after puja. The Collector greeted the people of the district on the occasion.

Every festival has a purpose and all the festivals in India are organised according to culture and traditions, said the Collector adding that the Bonala festival also has a purpose, that is the worship of nature.

Offering a meal to the Goddess Bonam means offering meals. He said that scientific matters are hidden in the attire, such as wearing neem branches.

State TNGOs president Karam Ravinder Reddy, State secretary general Rajender, District Revenue Officer Anjaya, DRDO Ramesh, District SC Welfare Officer Sasikala, District Woman and Child Welfare Officer Sravanthi CPO Sriramulu, TNGO president Kishan, Revenue Association president Ramana Reddy and other officers participated in the celebrations.
