Hyderabad: AICC scouting for a successor to Khuntia as Telangana in charge
The AICC is considering the names of party senior leaders Ashok Chavan, Gaurav Gogoi and Jairam Ramesh. The AICC may take a decision on replacing Khuntia in January
Hyderabad: The All India Congress Committee is searching for a leader to replace the Telangana State Congress in-charge RC Khuntia and it has been considering three names.
According to sources the AICC is considering the names of party senior leaders Ashok Chavan, Gaurav Gogoi and Jairam Ramesh. The AICC may take a decision on replacing Khuntia in January.
AICC general secretary and senior Congress leader of Odisha Ram Chandra Khuntia is looking after the affairs of Telangana Congress for the past four years on behalf of high command.
The high command conveys all the information through him to the State and takes feedback from him. In scheme of affairs of the Congress state incharge plays a key role. The AICC deals all the affairs of the state parties through the incharges. The incharge is responsible for the success and failures of the State party. He acts as control on the State party on behalf of the AICC. Khuntia has been appointed as incharge of the State Congress in place od former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh. In the beginning he was deputy of Digvijay and he was the secretary of the AICC at that time.
He has been elevated to the general secretary post and continued as the incharge of the State after the Digvijay's exit.
During his tenure Telangana Congress faced two general elections, both to Assembly and Parliament. The party lost all these polls and the by-polls.
As he has been the incharge for more than four years, the high command is strongly considering replacing him with another senior leader and has begun the search for him. Senior leaders of PCC said that former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan and MP Gaurav Gogoi names are being considered for this purpose.
They said that chances of appointing Jairam Ramesh as incharge of the State are remote since his style of functioning would not help the Telangana Congress to recover from the losses it has suffered.
Senior leaders said that three have no position of general secretary of the AICC and it is tradition in the Congress to appoint a general secretary as incharge of a state. In the next revamp of the AICC executive one of the three may be given the general secretary post and may be made incharge of the State.
